Craftsmanship in Fashion: A Creative Heritage that Diversifies and Spreads

Craftsmanship in fashion refers to the technique and manual skill used to create high-quality garments and accessories using traditional materials and processes. These techniques can include hand weaving, embroidery, knitting, hand-sewing, natural dyeing, lace-making, and the elaboration of decorative details using materials such as beads, feathers, and sequins.

Craftsmanship in fashion has become a way of preserving cultural traditions and promoting sustainability in the fashion industry. By using manual techniques, designers can create unique and personalized garments and accessories, and work with sustainable and ethically sourced materials. In addition, craftsmanship in fashion can be a way of celebrating cultural diversity and promoting the work of artisans and local communities.

To delve deeper into craftsmanship, this article will explore its etymological meaning and definition, the emerging trend of combining craftsmanship and design, and introduce talented Spanish artisans through the La Hacería project.

Etymology of Craftsmanship:

The word "craftsmanship" comes from the Latin term "artist manu," which means "art with the hands." This expression was used in ancient Rome to refer to activities involving the creation of objects through manual labor and the use of specific skills and techniques.

Over time, the term "craftsmanship" evolved to refer to any activity involving the creation of handmade objects, whether for utilitarian or aesthetic purposes. Today, an artisan is considered to be anyone who independently performs manual labor using traditional techniques and skills to create unique and high-quality products.

Definition of Craftsmanship and ARTisan:

La Hacería

During the conversation between Spanish designer Moises Nieto and philosopher Laura Suaréz at La Térmica on April 21st, they discussed the paradigm shift in fashion and the evolution of fashion shows, among other interesting topics. They delved into the project launched by Moises Nieto, La Hacería.

La Hacería is a platform that searches for Spanish craftswomen, geolocating experts in different fields such as cross-stitch, ceramics, footwear, and jewelry, among others, connecting the fashion industry with tradition. One of La Hacería's goals is to create a new way of working in the world of craftsmanship. In this search engine, you can find the technique or product you are looking for among some categories and connect with specialized artisans. Moreover, if you are an artisan, you can join through the registration form to be reviewed and become a part of it. Over 100 craftswomen are already part of the initiative.

La Hacería was the winner of the Madrid Capital de Moda 2020 contest, and it is supported by the Asociación Creadores de Moda de España (ACME) and the Madrid City Council, through the General Directorate of Commerce and Hospitality under the Strategic Subsidy Plan 2020-2022 of the Economy, Innovation, and Employment Department. It is also supported by Fundesarte, a leading institution in the development of national craftsmanship.
